To intensify the research communication in plant magnesium nutrition, International Magnesium Institute (IMI) organized an academic exchange conference “Magnesium Nutrition Workshop” in the 14th National Congress of Chinese Soil Society, also known as "Guardian soil health, Power quality development" on 24th September in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. Prof. Guo Shiwei, IMI chief scientist and Professor of Nanjing Agricultural University, chaired the workshop and shared his experience about the magnesium nutrient status in the Chinese soils and fertilization impact on crop yield and quality. More than 4,300 people including researchers, technical personnel from promotion units, fertilizer companies attended online and on-site, and participated actively in-depth discussion and exchange their scientific ideas on magnesium nutrition.

Seven young
magnesium nutrition researchers from the National Magnesium Network introduced
the recent research progress made in the field of magnesium nutrition in the
Magnesium Nutrition Workshop. Thery were Prof. Li. Xuexian, China Agricultural
University; Prof. Chen. Zhichang, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University;
Asst. Prof. Lu. Zhifeng, Huazhong Agricultural University; Asst. Prof. Wang.
Min, Nanjing Agricultural University; Assoc.Prof. Wu. Liangquan, Fujian
Agriculture and Forestry University; Ao. Junhua, researcher of Guangdong
Institute of Bioengineering; and Zhang. Baige, associate researcher of
Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Vegetable Research Institute. The
reports were comprehensive and rich in contents regarding the regulation
mechanism of magnesium on crop photosynthesis, growth and development, and its
effect on crop yield and quality; magnesium nutritional status in different
soil and cropping system; Effect of magnesium fertilizer in field and exploring
results scientific application of magnesium fertilizer; research progress of
magnesium nutrition in rapeseed, pomelo and sugarcane; and the potential of
reducing fertilizer and magnesium supplementation in saving cost, increasing
income, improving quality and efficiency, and reducing green emission.
Presentations
by the seven speakers at the Magnesium Nutrition Workshop
Through this workshop, the researchers came to know about the research progress made by the IMI and National Magnesium Network in recent years. It was also hoped that the current status of magnesium nutrition in cultivated soils in China could be widely understood, and to attract more attention to magnesium nutrition in China and improve the application of magnesium fertilizer in production practice.
