On 25th-28th Nov, 2018, the 3rd International Symposium on Magnesium was successfully held in Guangzhou, China. Following the first two Magnesium symposia (Gottingen, Germany, 2012 and Sao Paolo, Brazil, 2014),260 magnesium nutrition research experts from 11 countries gathered in Guangzhou. They came from Germany, Turkey, Japan, United Kingdom, Australia, USA, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Serbia , mainland China and Taipei. Through the speech and poster presentation, participants had discussed and exchanged the frontier issues of magnesium nutrition researches, such as the effectiveness of magnesium in soil, the role and function of magnesium in crops, animals and human body, and the improvement of the utilization efficiency of magnesium. The organizing committee had also thoughtful arrangement of the site visiting in the Foshan Modern Agricultural Industrial Park that created ample and diversified communication and learning platform among participants of the 3rd International Symposium on Magnesium.

Prof. Fusuo Zhang, Chairman of the 3rd International Symposium on Magnesium, Prof. Andreas Gransee, Head InnoLab AgTech and Nutrition of K+S KALI GmbH and Ganjun Yi
Vice President of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences had a welcome address at the opening of the Symposium in the morning of 26th Nov. The conference had arranged 9 domestic and overseas keynote speech, 19 oral presentation and 30 poster presentation (see annex 3) among 4 topics, which are 1) Mg dynamics in soils, 2) Mg fertilizers and crop production, 3) Mg in plant physiology and molecular biology, 4) Mg in animal and human nutrition. The researches focus on magnesium nutrition health problems in life system of "soil - crop - animals -human body", reveal the situation and causes of magnesium deficiency in global agricultural production, explore the effect and efficient utilization of magnesium in agricultural production, and get through the obstacle of scientific theory and actual production with the purpose to achieve high quality and efficient production and protect human nutrition and health.

A special session was held to commemorate Prof. Volker Römheld who worked in the University of Hohenheim, Germany, to memorize his great contribution to the development of international plant nutrition, and in particular to the cultivation of plant nutrition personnel in China.

The symposium commended and rewarded 2 young scientists and 2 doctoral students who had made outstanding contributions to agricultural magnesium research in China. The two young scientists who won the prize were Dr. Liangquan Wu from the International Magnesium Institute and Dr. Baige Zhang from the Vegetable Research Institute, Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The two outstanding PhD students were Zheng Wang from China Agricultural University and Kailiu Xie from Nanjing Agricultural University. The symposium also selected the winners of the best poster award, the second best poster award and the third best poster award.

In the morning of 28
th Nov, 110 participants travelled to Foshan Modern Agricultural Industrial Park from Guangzhou, 100km away. They visited various new cultivated and bred vegetable varieties, saw the effects of magnesium fertilizer application on reducing magnesium deficiency symptoms in pepper, eggplant, tomato, kale, leaf vegetable, radish and melon, and discussed the field experiment of magnesium nutrition.

The
symposium was organized by International Magnesium Institute (IMI), Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University and China Agricultural University. Thank you for the great support from Vegetable Research Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Applied Plant Nutrition (IAPN) at Göttingen University, Germany, Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey and the Center for Magnesium Education and Research, Hawaii, USA. and Shenzhen K+S trading Co., Ltd.
